Annual Newsletter 1984
Dear Friends:
A wit once said that if you don’t succeed very often you’ re running about average. So it is on the farm this year. Average in the sense that there is no peach crop. Last Christmas Eve’s cold snap took its toll. Yet, in spite of that sour note, we have enjoyed the marvelous weather so far this summer.
The Gammie gang thanks you for stopping by Quarry Hill Orchards last summer and fall. The time you take to stop and chat is all a part of the joy we find in selling peaches and apples. After all, you give us a reason for being together as a family.
Our two-year-old, Adrianne, has launched into a predictable vocabulary – ” bebes” (bears), “boonies” (balloons), and “ba-poos” (apples, of course). Ben is five now and somewhat warily anticipating kindergarten this fall. Bill’s Mom and Uncle Len continue to lend a comforting hand to the somewhat uncertain business of growing fruit.
Right now we are in a less hectic stage of the year. Thinning apples (this is done so that the remaining apples can get bigger) and some summer pruning are the main farming activities. The pressure of a harvest is not yet here, so we have extra time to spend together.
We are anxious, however, to get going. We will be selling peaches beginning the second week in August. Although reports indicate no peaches anywhere in Ohio, other areas in the midwest have been spared and do have a good crop. We do anticipate a good selection. Summer apples are already here, and we believe they make the best applesauce. While the fall apple crop is not big, the quality is good, and we wil be having “pick your own” apples.
Keep the following dates in mind:
Aug. 10- Sept. 10 Peaches
Sept. 1 – 15 Plums
Sept. 1 – 15 Pears
Sept. 15- 20 Fall apples begin
1st three weeks in Oct. Pick your own apples
We look forward to seeing you!
The Gammies
